Brief introduction of Bentonite

The term Bentonite was first used for a clay found in 1890 in Montana, United States. Bentonite is one of the most abundant rocks found in nature is a type of clay often refined from volcanic ash. Bentonite is also called “activated clay” for its affinity in some chemical reactions that are caused by an excessive negative charge

One of the most industrially popular minerals(+) today is Bentonite.  As it is a highly absorbent material it is one of the most useful substances in industrial applications.

So far, two types of Bentonite are recognized, and the uses of each depend on their specific properties. Type 1- which is called Sodium Bentonite is a type of swelling clay and has single water layer particles which contain Na+ as the exchangeable ion; Type 2 is called Calcium Bentonite which is non-swelling clay that has a double water layer with Ca2+ as the exchangeable ion

Additionally, Bentonite has very special properties, particularly its expansion in water which gives it a gelatinous and voluminous mass. The high specific surface of Bentonite gives it a large capacity for both absorption and adsorption.

Among all its versatile applications, it has application in industries such as molding, foundry, construction, Iron Ore Pelletizing, paper Industry, varnish and paint, drilling, etc.
